Whenever I'm trying a new restaurant, I always appreciate the places that don't try too hard. The Balboa is exactly that kind of spot.

It's a low-key neighborhood bar in Bankers Hill with a relaxed atmosphere, good food, cold drinks, and the kind of place where you can easily spend a couple of hours hanging out with friends.

I stopped by on a Saturday around 4:00 p.m. for dinner and drinks, which happened to line up with Happy Hour. Street parking was available nearby, and after walking in, it immediately felt like a classic neighborhood hangout. Pool table, arcade games, plenty of seating, and a casual dive-bar feel that makes everyone welcome. It was a warm day when I visited, and while the inside felt a little warm without much air conditioning, it definitely didn't take away from the overall experience.

One thing I liked was how simple everything was. You order your food and drinks at the bar, grab a table number, and they bring everything out to you. The staff was friendly, and the service was quick without feeling rushed.

What we ordered

For dinner I ordered The Balboa Burger along with the Salt & Pepper Fries served with their zesty house aioli. To drink, I had a Mexican lager and later a Moscow Mule.

The burger was exactly what I was hoping for. Juicy, cooked perfectly, and with that classic burger flavor that doesn't need a long list of toppings to stand out. It's easy to see why so many people recommend it.

As good as the burger was, the fries completely stole the show.

If someone asked me what they absolutely have to order here, I’d probably tell them to start with the Salt & Pepper Fries. Easily some of the best fries I’ve had in San Diego.

The atmosphere

The Balboa isn't trying to be an upscale gastropub, and I think that's exactly why it works. It's the kind of neighborhood bar where you can stop in wearing just about anything, grab a burger and a beer, watch a game, play a round of pool, or catch up with friends over a few drinks.

It's a great option for a casual date night, dinner with friends, happy hour, or even a relaxed family meal earlier in the evening.

Happy Hour

If you're thinking about visiting, I'd recommend stopping by during Happy Hour from 4:00–6:00 p.m. It's a great excuse to grab a drink, order the fries, and settle in for a while. Hours can change, so it's worth confirming before you head out.

The bottom line

The Balboa won't be the fanciest restaurant you'll visit in San Diego, but that's not what makes it special. It's a fun neighborhood bar with a great atmosphere, an outstanding burger, and fries that completely exceeded my expectations. I'll definitely be back — and next time I'll probably order those fries all over again.
