Little Italy has no shortage of great places to eat, but a new breakfast spot just opened that caught my attention.
Egg Tuck, the Los Angeles-based breakfast concept known for its soft scrambled egg sandwiches, has officially made its San Diego debut at 1331 Columbia Street in Little Italy.
I haven’t made it over yet, so I’m not going to pretend this is a review. But after looking through the menu, it’s definitely somewhere I want to try.
What Is Egg Tuck?
Egg Tuck started as a pop-up in Los Angeles’ Koreatown in 2018 and has since expanded beyond LA. The Little Italy location is the brand’s first in San Diego.
The concept is pretty straightforward: really soft scrambled eggs tucked into house-made brioche with different toppings and sauces.
Their Classic Egg keeps things simple with scrambled eggs, chives, sriracha aioli and egg sauce. You can also add things like bacon, cheese or avocado.
If you want something a little more substantial, the Royal West adds a Korean-style beef patty, over-medium egg, cheddar, grilled onions, pickles and sauces.
They also have breakfast burritos, loaded tater tots and a café menu with coffee, matcha and other drinks.
Why Little Italy Makes Sense
I actually think Little Italy is a pretty natural fit for something like Egg Tuck.
The neighborhood already has an incredible restaurant scene, but this gives you another casual option for breakfast or an easy grab-and-go meal. It’s also right at the bottom of The Lindley apartment building near Ash and Columbia, so it’s within walking distance of a lot of Downtown and Little Italy.
Egg Tuck specifically chose Little Italy for its first San Diego location, and I can see why. There’s a constant mix of people who live nearby, work Downtown and are visiting the neighborhood.
It’s Already Getting Some Attention
The San Diego location had been in the works for more than a year before finally opening, so there was already some anticipation around it.
Early feedback has been pretty positive, although I’m always a little hesitant to judge a restaurant based on its first few weeks. New restaurants usually need some time to settle in.
For me, the pictures of those soft scrambled egg sandwiches are enough to make me want to give it a shot.
What I Want to Try
I’m leaning toward the Bacon & Cheese sandwich for my first visit, but the Royal West looks pretty good too. And knowing me, there’s a decent chance the tater tots end up on the table as well.
Once I actually make it over there, I’ll come back and update this article with what I ordered and whether I think it’s worth the stop.
