I had been wanting to try Serea at the Hotel del Coronado for a while, and it definitely lived up to the experience.
We made reservations about a week in advance for a Wednesday evening and were seated outside just behind the bar. If you're able to, I highly recommend requesting patio seating. Between the ocean views and watching the sunset, it really adds to the overall experience.
What we ordered
We started with the house sourdough focaccia, which came with an incredibly unique chicken chicharrones butter. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal. We also ordered the Big Eye Tuna Tartare, which was fresh, flavorful, and a great way to start dinner.
For my entrée, I ordered the wood-fired whole fish, and it was easily the highlight of the night. It was perfectly cooked, simple, and let the quality of the fish really shine. We also shared the patatas bravas, which paired well with the meal, and finished everything off with the Basque cheesecake. If you've never had one before, it's basically a cheesecake without the crust, and the strawberry topping made it a great dessert to share.
We paired dinner with a bottle of Sancerre (Château La Rabotine, France), which complemented the seafood perfectly.
The rating and the caveat
Overall, I'd give Serea a solid 9 out of 10. The atmosphere, oceanfront setting, cozy feel, and quality of the food made it a memorable experience.
The only downside was the valet parking, which is pretty expensive. I'd recommend finding nearby public parking instead if you don't mind a short walk. Coronado is walkable enough that spending 5 extra minutes to save on valet is usually worth it.
While it's not somewhere I'd visit every week, it's absolutely a place I'd come back to for a special occasion, date night, or when friends and family are visiting San Diego.
Where it sits
Serea's setting inside the historic Coronado village is part of what makes it work. If you're already thinking about spending a day on the island — walking Orange Avenue, hitting the beach, or exploring the Hotel del itself — a Serea reservation is a natural close to the day. And for anyone considering buying in Coronado, spending an evening at the Hotel del Coronado is a pretty good introduction to what the island lifestyle actually looks like at its best.
