August is a great month to get out and experience different parts of San Diego. There are events happening throughout the county, so rather than separating everything into individual neighborhood articles, this guide brings some of the most interesting August events together in one place.
The goal isn't to list every event happening in San Diego. It's to provide a curated selection worth knowing about — easy to skim, with a good mix of festivals, concerts, sports, and seasonal activities across the county.
Festivals & Community Events
ArtWalk Liberty Station
One of the first major events of the month is ArtWalk Liberty Station, held August 1 and 2 in the Arts District at Liberty Station. The weekend festival features more than 175 artists displaying paintings, photography, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, and other original work. Live music, food vendors, and interactive art activities round out the experience. A separate ticketed preview party takes place Friday evening, July 31.
Tiki Oasis
Tiki Oasis returns to the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley from August 5 through 9. The multiday event includes live music, DJs, tropical cocktails, a sunset luau, art exhibits, educational seminars, and a large marketplace featuring artists and vendors. Because some activities require separate tickets, it's worth checking the schedule before deciding which portions you'd like to attend.
Hillcrest CityFest
On August 9, Hillcrest CityFest takes over Fifth Avenue from noon until 11:00 p.m. The neighborhood street festival includes live entertainment, DJs, food, arts, crafts, and local vendors. It's one of my featured events because it gives visitors a chance to attend a large community celebration while also exploring the restaurants and businesses throughout Hillcrest. If you've been curious about the neighborhood, this is a great weekend to walk it.
Concerts & Live Music
La Jolla Music Society SummerFest
Music is a major part of August in San Diego. SummerFest runs from July 31 through August 29 at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. The annual La Jolla Music Society festival features several weeks of chamber music, jazz, special collaborations, and performances by musicians from around the world.
Twilight in the Park
For a free outdoor option, Twilight in the Park continues at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening through August 27. Concerts run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with August performances ranging from classic country and rock to big-band music, salsa, mariachi, and Cajun music.
San Diego Sports
San Diego Padres at Petco Park
August offers a strong month of home baseball. The San Diego Padres have several home series at Petco Park in Downtown San Diego, including matchups against the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, and Pittsburgh Pirates. For anyone considering the neighborhoods around the ballpark, a game weekend is a good way to feel the energy of the district firsthand.
San Diego FC — Leagues Cup at Snapdragon Stadium
Soccer fans have opportunities to see San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley during the Leagues Cup. The team is scheduled to face Club Tijuana on August 9 and Puebla FC on August 12. Start times and ticket details should be confirmed through the team's official channels before heading out.
Bike the Bay
Later in the month, Bike the Bay takes place on August 23. The annual community ride gives registered participants the opportunity to bicycle across the San Diego–Coronado Bay Bridge before continuing along a route around San Diego Bay. It's a fundraiser and community ride rather than a competitive race, which is part of what makes it a good on-ramp for people who haven't done a large group ride before.

- ArtWalk Liberty Station — Free on Saturday and Sunday, one of the largest weekend art festivals in the region.
- Twilight in the Park — Free outdoor concerts three nights a week at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
- Hillcrest CityFest — Free general admission for a full-day neighborhood street festival.
All three give you a real feel for the neighborhoods they anchor — and none require a ticket for the core experience. That's a good combination for anyone new to San Diego or thinking about where they want to spend more time.
