Downtown San Diego is officially getting a Whole Foods Market.

After years of hearing about a potential Whole Foods coming Downtown, the company has confirmed that its new location at 201 W. A Street will open September 23, 2026.

And this isn’t a small-format market. The new Whole Foods will be approximately 45,400 square feet, making it a pretty substantial addition to this part of Downtown.

Where Is the New Whole Foods?

The new Whole Foods is located at 201 W. A Street, at the base of The Torrey, a newer residential tower near Front and A streets.

The location puts it within walking distance of several parts of Downtown, including the Columbia District, the Downtown Core and the southern end of Little Italy.

For me, that’s what makes this opening particularly interesting. It’s obviously nice to get a new grocery store, but having a full-size market within walking distance of so many Downtown residences is the bigger story.

What’s Inside?

Whole Foods has released quite a bit of information about what we can expect from the new store.

One of the bigger features will be a coffee and juice bar serving made-to-order coffee, tea, juices and smoothies.

There will also be the Whole Foods staples you’d expect, including a full-service meat counter, seafood counter, bakery and specialty cheese department.

The prepared foods section sounds pretty extensive too, with:

  • Hot food and salad bars
  • Pizza by the slice or whole pie
  • A Market Sandwich counter
  • Market Plate meals
  • Fresh sushi made daily

The store will also carry more than 1,500 products from California-based suppliers, which I like seeing in a new San Diego location.

Having a full-size market within walking distance of so many Downtown residences is the bigger story here.

A Big Addition for Downtown Living

I think this is one of those openings that matters beyond simply having another place to shop.

Downtown San Diego has continued adding residential towers and more people living in the neighborhood full-time. Having everyday conveniences within walking distance is a big part of what makes urban living actually work.

Someone living nearby will now be able to walk downstairs or a few blocks, grab groceries, pick up dinner or get a coffee without necessarily getting in the car.

That’s a meaningful addition to Downtown.

What About Parking?

If you don’t live within walking distance, you won’t necessarily have to avoid this location either.

The Whole Foods is part of The Torrey development, which includes dedicated parking for grocery customers. That’s worth noting because parking is usually one of my first questions anytime something new opens Downtown.

Of course, we’ll see what the actual parking experience is like once the store opens and gets busy.

Opening Day

The Downtown San Diego Whole Foods officially opens Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 9:00 AM.

Whole Foods says the first 300 customers in line will receive a limited-edition Downtown San Diego tote bag along with a Secret Saver coupon offering savings of up to $100.

After opening day, regular store hours are expected to be 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.

I’ll definitely be checking this one out once it opens. I’m especially interested to see how the Downtown location compares with the existing San Diego Whole Foods stores and whether it feels designed more around people walking in from the surrounding neighborhood.

Either way, after a long wait, Downtown San Diego is finally getting its Whole Foods.
